Thomas Lynch / Senior Solicitor

Senior Solicitor at Kay & Hughes, Tom is recognised by the Legal 500 Asia Pacific as a key, ‘solutions orientated lawyer for Media and Entertainment in Australia (2022, 2023). 

Tom is invested in his clients’ commercial outcomes, offering clear guidance on navigating the complexities of creative industries across a range of legal areas including intellectual property, contracts, employment, commercial disputes and defamation. His engagement with renowned artists, leading arts organisations and media groups sees him advise on matters locally and internationally, including in the United States, United Kingdom, Japan and Taiwan. 

Tom is also notable for his pro bono and industry work. He is a longstanding volunteer for the Arts Law Centre of Australia where he’s received the Pro-Bono Print Commission Award (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022) and chaired the Hearts for Arts law Committee (2016-2019). He was also nominated for the Community Legal Centres Law and Justice Award for outstanding commitment to improving access to justice in NSW (2017) and lectured in Media Law at the Australian Institute of Music (2018-2020).

Tom holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Contemporary Music. Whilst studying law and music in the Northern Rivers region of NSW, Tom forged a strong connection with the vibrant local arts community and gained insight into the challenges of working as a creative in the Australian arts industry. 

 Representative Experience:

  • Advising and negotiating on behalf of an international advertising agency, regarding high profile talent in award-winning campaigns. 
  • Advising renowned Sydney-based theatre company in its UK-tour of a multi award-winning production.
  • Representing a national arts organisation in a prominent merger and restructuring deal.
  • Representing a leading live-events and touring producer in Federal Circuit Court litigation, resulting in a successful outcome for the client.
  • Advising rights holders in respect of licensing deals for a world-renowned Australian Indigenous stage musical.
  • Assisting a Sydney-based video game developer in securing federal funding for multi-platform video game project.
